This is a rare collection of 6 handmade Mexican folk art pieces by Aurelio Flores (1901-1987) . Flores is credited with originating the multicolored clay Trees of Life in Izucar de Matamoros. His style includes using many colors of paint and painting small lines to create patterns.
The family’s pieces have been exhibited in museums in Canada, England and the United States as depictions of the beginning of 20th century Mexican Folk Art.
The Country/Region of Manufacture is Mexico, and the items are highly sought after by collectors of Latin American art.
The collection features a six-piece marching band in traditional formal attire, reflecting the rich culture of Mexico. They are mostly 5″ tall, with the largest being the tuba player, who measures 7″ to the top of his tuba. They are made of a molded clay material with some thin metal pieces as the frame connection to some of the wind instruments and drums.
Typically these are seen only in single quantities or pairs and usually with decreased coloration. This set has been well kept and delivers the simplicity and beauty of the Flores work.
There are some minor repairs to damage as seen in photos. As these pieces are single fired bisque clay, they are to be handled with care.
